Trying Something New

For a while I've been wanting to incorporate recipes into the website. I've always loved trying new recipes and anytime I come across an old recipe book it's always fun to see what's in them. I am not going to lie I've had my fare share of recipe fails. Most of them have involved an Angel Food Cake. I am still trying to figure that one out. Since it is fall and my orchard has a few ripe apples, we are going to start this recipe series off with Apple Dumplings. This recipe has been a favorite ever since I was a child. I remember my grandmother making it every fall. This recipe is a little involved, but it's so good that it's totally worth it. Below are the instructions for this recipe. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Ingredients for Dough:

4 Cups of All Purpose Flour

1 Teaspoon of Salt

1 1/2 Teaspoons of Baking Powder

1 Cup of Crisco

1 Cup of Milk

Mix flour, salt, and baking powder together. Cut in crisco, then add milk. The dough should be a consistancy that you can roll out. Roll out dough and cut into 10 squares. (Note: once I cut out my 10 squares I will roll them out individually so they will be a more consistant size, plus you want the the dough to be pretty thin.)

Ingredients for Sauce:

1 Cup of Sugar

1 Cup of water

1 Cup of Cream

2 Teaspoons of Vanilla

In a sauce pan mix sugar, water, and cream. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Be sure to stir, otherwise mixture could scald. Remove from heat and add vanilla. Pour mixture in 9 x 13 inch pan.

Ingredients for filling:

8 medium apples

1 1/4 cups of sugar

1 teaspoon of cinnamon (this can be adjusted for taste preferences)

2 tablespoons of butter

Lay out your 10 squares of dough, divide apples among the 10 squares. Mix sugar and cinnamon together in a bowl, divide mixture among the 10 squares, you will pour it on top of the apples. Divide the cold butter and add to the top of apples. Lastly pull each corner of the dough and pinch together. Carefully place the dumpling in the sauce, then bake at 450 degrees for 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 350 degrees, bake until done, about 20 minutes.
